Disney's Animal Kingdom opened on Earth Day, April 22, 1998, introducing guests to a completely new type of theme park that blended live animals, elaborate settings, and dramatic adventures. This 1998 guide map documents the park at its very beginning, highlighting a layout that was vastly different from the other Walt Disney World parks but grounded in the same legendary attention to detail.
Opening Year Lands and Layout
The 1998 map showcases the five original areas that welcomed guests during the park’s first year:
- The Oasis — the lush, tropical entry pathway designed to ease visitors into the sights and sounds of nature, featuring animal exhibits and winding paths.
- Safari Village — the park's central hub situated on an island in the Discovery River, anchored by the iconic Tree of Life and serving as the gateway to the other lands (later renamed Discovery Island).
- Camp Minnie-Mickey — a rustic, woodland area designed to look like a summer camp where visitors could meet classic Disney characters and watch the spectacular Festival of the Lion King show.
- Africa — featuring the village of Harambe, which served as the entrance to the signature Kilimanjaro Safaris expedition across the savanna and the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
- DinoLand U.S.A. — themed as a quirky roadside dig site, home to the thrilling Countdown to Extinction (later renamed DINOSAUR) and the Boneyard play area.
An Evolving Adventure
What makes the 1998 Animal Kingdom map so fascinating is what it doesn't show. Asia was still under construction (opening later in 1999 with the Kali River Rapids), and the legendary Expedition Everest coaster wouldn't arrive until 2006.
